Certified ”organic” coffees are grown in the traditional way using sustainable agricultural methods. No synthetic or chemical fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides are used in growing or processing organic coffees. Unfortunately, when “issue coffee”—coffees grown with the emphasis on a particular social or political philosophy—were first introduced, the quality of the coffee was inconsistent. As a result, many consumers for whom “organic” “or “shade grown” or “bird friendly” are descriptors of conscience were forced to take their chances among those early crops. We suspect the disappointment inherent in inconsistency and mediocrity led many of those coffee drinkers to switch to tea!

Although we have always applauded the farmers who take the plunge and switch to organic methods, we believe that the coffee produced on those farms must meet the high standards of specialty coffee, if consumers are going to keep drinking the coffee. These standards are met by only approximately ten percent of the world’s coffee, whether conventionally grown or organically grown. At Rock City Coffee Roasters, we are always looking for delicious, high quality, organically grown coffees. And whenever possible, the organically grown coffees we buy are also fair traded. We were one of the first coffee roasters in Maine to meet the new USDA standards for processing organic coffees, and we are inspected and certified annually by Maine’s certification board, Maine Organic Farmers & Growers Association.

Whether your tastes run to the bright, high grown Central American coffees, the distinctively winey African coffees, the full-bodied, low-acid Indonesian coffees, dark roasts or decafs, we carry a full range of certified organically grown coffees.
